El Priorato
Atienza Maure Arquitectos rebuilds a fire-damaged Castilian house with concrete arches
Date
October 2, 2025
Atienza Maure Arquitectos renovated El Priorato, a large house in Trespaderne, Spain. Fire had destroyed the interior, leaving only the original stone walls intact.
The architects added a new structure within the surviving walls. White concrete arches define the interior spaces and support the rebuilt floors. The arches run perpendicular to the stone perimeter, creating a structural rhythm that organizes the layout.
Skylights positioned between the arches bring natural light to the lower levels. A second staircase, built by local craftsmen, sits adjacent to the original stair location. The concrete and stone create a material contrast that distinguishes old from new without competing.
The renovation preserves the house's scale and presence in the Castilian landscape while creating contemporary interior spaces. The white concrete against stone walls marks the intervention clearly, showing what survived the fire and what was rebuilt.
